Ontario in the World

Introduction

As Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, one of my mandate themes is Ontario in the World. The important distinction here is the word “in” – Ontarians are so much more than passive visitors in their work and travels. Rather, we are active participants in building partnerships, spearheading new initiatives, and contributing to sustainability programs around the globe. Everywhere you go, you can find a connection to Ontario – a testament to our province’s contributions and engagement.

Ontario in the World Initiatives

As an example of Ontario in the World, I would like to highlight some of the excellent work currently being done in Kenya. Kenya is an economic hub in East Africa and home to a wide variety of leading development and sustainability initiatives. Having lived in Nairobi during my time as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), I am always inspired by the excellent examples of growth and collaboration that can be found throughout the country – many of which feature a connection to Ontario.

Visits and International Missions

Wherever you go in the world, the impact of Ontario and Ontarians is apparent. I have been privileged, during my time as Lieutenant Governor, to represent the province at international events and during missions abroad. Each time I return home from these visits, I am proud of our openness to learning from others, all that we have to offer,  and how grateful I am for where we live.
