About The Levee
The New Year’s Levee is a cherished tradition held to welcome the new year and foster a sense of community and connection.
It offers a unique opportunity for youth, families, seniors, and members of the public to meet the Honourable Edith Dumont, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, in a welcoming and festive environment. This event is a chance to engage with Her Honour, learn about her role in our democracy, enjoy local entertainment, and visit the historic Lieutenant Governor’s Suite.
The first Levee in North America was hosted on January 1st, 1646, in the Château St. Louis in Québec City by Charles Huault de Montmagny, Governor of New France.
The word Levee comes from the French verb lever – to rise (specifically from one’s bed) – and has its origins in the Levée du Soleil or Rising of the Sun ceremony hosted by King Louis XIV, who would receive the members of his court in the royal bedchamber just after arising, a practice that subsequently spread throughout Europe.
The Levee tradition has continued and evolved over the centuries, and now many public officials will host their own Levees to meet with members of the public.
Today, the purpose of the event is to express goodwill and best wishes for the coming year and to celebrate the values of community and inclusion.
