“Tonight I joined University of Toronto President, Meric Gertler, and students, at a memorial service to share condolences on behalf of Ontarians on loss of the 6 students killed in the crash of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 near Tehran.
Through the painstaking work of the media and the openness of family and friends we have been privileged to hear the stories of so many who enriched our country with their hard work, intelligence, and kindness. They contributed daily to social cohesion in their communities. They will not be forgotten.
We are heartbroken that so many of our educational institutions, where the search for excellence, innovation, and diversity of opinion and experience is so valued, has paid such a high price in this tragedy. Our province, known around the world as one of the best places to come to learn and do research, welcomes with open arms all those who seek to ask questions and gain knowledge.
Let us honour the deaths of all 176 victims by recognizing the gift of our education system, which brings so many from around the world to live and study here. Across Ontario communities, organizations, schools, friends, and families are mourning. May we seek solace in one another and in our faith that the values that bring us together remain strong and will help us through this difficult time.”
– The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario
