Bonn, June 17, 2019: The office of Her Honour the Hon. Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, launched the art exhibition Awakening at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) conference in Bonn, Germany, in the afternoon of Monday, June 17.
Speakers at the launch event included Ms. Patricia Espinosa, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, and the Hon. Stéphane Dion, Ambassador of Canada to Germany and Special Envoy to the European Union and Europe.
The provocative exhibition and accompanying publication seek to answer the question, “Now that we can do anything, what will we do?” using the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals as a framework. The exhibition was curated by the celebrated Canadian designer, Bruce Mau, and are generously on loan from the Canada Council Art Bank.
First commissioned by Her Honour, the exhibition hung in the Lieutenant Governor’s Suite in Toronto from May 2018 to February 2019, where it was viewed by over 10,000 visitors. It was subsequently exhibited at United Nations Headquarters in New York in March–April 2019 and at the United Nations Office at Geneva in May–June 2019.
“Our province takes much pride in sharing Awakening with those who serve the world, often far from home. May the vision and lessons of Ontario and Ontarians inspire us all to build resilience and to see ourselves as part of a global project. Thank you to the UNFCCC, the Embassy of Canada in Germany, and the Canada Council for their support in making Awakening an exhibition for people around the world to enjoy.” – the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario
The exhibition will remain on display at the UNFCCC conference until June 27.
